Multipotentialite– new word for me.
Someone who has many interests and creative pursuits, and the ability to excel in two or more different fields. Multipotentialites are often very curious, and can find creative ways to combine different ideas. They can also learn, explore, and master new skills, and have the potential to innovate and solve problems.
I think this describes Nate to a T!
During Nate’s senior session, I realized both in conversation with him and in actual doing…he loves using his hands and also building things. He is currently building a lighthouse for his school prom. He’s also built the “focal” point for every big dance since his 9th-grade year. A moon, a slot machine, a pirate ship- he’s the go-to for all the big projects. Everyone needs a Nate! Right? Everyone needs a Nate!
Additionally, he’s been on leadership at his school, Pacific Crest Academy and on the dance committee, too. He’s been Class President twice and just won the leadership award at school. Nate is quiet but clearly in that confidence, he’s loved and respected as a leader.
He participated with the El Dorado High Track team in shot put and discus- which doesn’t surprise me as it’s something he can use his hands for. In fact, his “throwing team” just won the end-of-the-year running relay.
….And that’s not it. He’s a multi-instramentalist and has taught himself the banjo, mandolin, stand up bass and acoustic guitar. At Westside Church https://pv.westsideinfo.com/ he has been in youth group all 4 years, and played in the worship band for church since Junior High. Currently, he is helping lead worship in youth.
This semester Nate completed an internship with an electrical company and hopes to be trained as a commercial electrician.
I first met Nate and started photographing the Gray Family when he was maybe three years old. I was joking with Lance, Nate’s father, at that time, to pull few smiles out of him. I had to do the same thing with Nate and it made me smile to recognize the similarities in their personalities. Let’s be clear though, Nate wanted nothing to do with “cheesy” smiles- nor do I, in general. After our session at Cronin Ranch and getting to know his adult self a little better, I realized that I wanted to capture him IN one of his many passions, doing something he loves, so we set up a music session one morning at his home. As some know, as a previous owner of a recording studio, I’m a sucker for the music kids. I just love them.
You never know when you meet a young child what their path will be and it’s been so lovely to witness Nate’s path to adulthood. Handsome, kind, big heart, curious, introverted and confident. Such an honor to be trusted to capture all the Gray kids. It just makes my heart full.
Oh, and I can’t forget to mention Mavey who, unlike Nate, wanted to be the center of attention, the lead role in the show.
Mavey….stealing.the.show.
haha.
